39 Years and Counting
I’m excited to share a BRAND NEW song with you, hot off the press, and you’re the first group to hear it! This song, ‘39 Years and Counting’, is a rewrite of a song I wrote nine years ago called ‘30 Years and Counting’, and part of a larger worship project I’m currently working on where I’m reimagining and reorchestrating songs I wrote in years past with brighter and fuller instrumentation. This song is a lament to my fickleness and a Hallelujah to God’s faithfulness.
Lyrics:
I lift my voice and cry to You, “Oh God, You’ve got my heart!”
The very same voice that I use to curse what You’ve made
And I raise my hands and cry to You, “How great Thou art!”
The very same hands that fashioned an idol yesterday
But You are not fooled
You see how pitiful my heart is
But You keep loving me regardless
And I am the fool
Cuz I see how beautiful Your love is
So why do I keep loving You like this?
After 39 years and counting
I lift my eyes to Heaven in hopes that I’ll catch a glimpse
The same eyes that I turn away from my neighbor’s need
Oh, I offer You my time and money without thought of the expense
But the offering plate can’t cover up all of my greed
And You are not fooled

You’ve got scars on both Your wrists from my betrayal
Each day I bring a hundred wounds with every kiss
The fruit of Cain I intermix with lambs of Abel
So why am I still welcomed here at Your table?
God it is still confounding
That Your grace is still abounding
For 39 years and counting You’ve been by my side
So till I take my last breath
And run with laughter past death

I’ve been overloaded with musical production and work this week, which means that this musical post is taking the place of my usual biblical meditation through Genesis, but I’ll pick up where we left off first thing next week, Lord willing.
